The Church of Surf

Sunday morning services were well attended today, in the dead of winter, almost as well attended as during the summer. Year-round the service starts, oh, whenever people wake up from whatever they were doing the night before. The later it got in the morning, the more people showed up. Today was truly an interdenominational service, with friends, Mafia, regulars, and no-namers co-existing mostly peacefully. Smiles all around. I was within three feet of Tim Hill (the Mafia asshole who, you will recall, abused me verbally and threatened me with physical harm at the beginning of the summer) for much of the morning and wasn't going to move because I liked the spot. But he kept his lying slandering mouth shut.

And the day was fun. The waves were small and the sun was glorious. I was working on my timing and on getting all the elements of surfing to work on one wave. I did get the timing right a bunch of times. One thing that was helpful, when I found myself catching waves but not getting or staying up, was just to wait a split second longer before attempting the popup. I'm pretty sure that doesn't work on waves that are more closeout-y than today's, but it worked today.

I think (no, I know) people were surprised at how well I was doing. No one more so than the guy who dropped out in me cause that's what everyone does, then ended up riding a wave with me.
I got comments like, "I saw you doing a popup and I couldn't believe it---I said, was that Grandma?" and "You're really doing better."

Like a certain musician-surfer says: "The first five years are the hardest."

I know Tim Hill and he's not and never has been a member of any organized crime including the Mafia. He's not one for popularity contests and he's not one to verbally or physically abuse people although he's fiercely protective of his relatives and close friends. And while he'd even agree that he's no saint, i have to wonder to everyone here why you would fixate on a person who, by your admission, said nothing to you -good or bad - even though you were "three feet away."

maybe he was more intent on catching a couple waves than on defaming or worrying about the opinions of those around him; at the time or after the fact. regardless, it's apparent you care more about what others think, say and do than you do about your own abilities; especially as it relates to surfing.

you'd be well-suited to ignoring those you don't care to interact with rather than giving them further reason to pursue more formal, legal options.

I intend to give Tim printouts of each of your blogs that name him. I'm certain he'll find them of great use should he need to pursue further action.

hopefully though, you'll find a way to cease and desist without more formal action.

Who's this? Whoever you are, if you read back, you'll see I'm using the term "surf mafia" not to mean organized crime of any sort, but to convey the territoriality of people who perceive themselves as locals and expert surfers.

And while I have made it my policy not to use real names here, when conduct gets really egregious like threats of physical harm and slander(read back to my post last June about Tim threatening me simply because I stood upon "his" sand) I consider that people have forfeited a right to that courtesy.

I don't know what Tim's problem is, I only know it has nothing to do with me. I am glad to peacefully co-exist, as I said, since we live in close proximity and can't wholly avoid each other.
But I will stand up to threats, violence and abuse.

As far as Tim's actions towards me, any number of people have witnessed them. I guess you weren't one of them. Tell him I have no interest in fighting nor do I care what he thinks. Peace.

I went surfing with my partner last november in costa rica. it was my 50th birthday, and she is 61.
we had a huge amount of fun, and i am wondering where to go next for beginner waves, sandy bottom, clear and warm water, easy access to rental boards and cozy hotels or B&B's.
Also, I just want you to know that I am delighted to read your blog, it is fascinating to me. Thank you for doing that. I'm sorry you are having to deal with such hostile people and I hope you won't let them bring you down.
