Explain this to me please
I love low tide. It's the perfect time for me to try to surf around here, but I rarely manage dead low when the waves roll in for such a long time that I have time to think of what to do.
Beautiful, warm, sunny day, no one out. Going into the water I thought I could actually enjoy myself today. But it was not to be.
It was a completely unproductive day, a waste of time, and totally unfun.
I thought the waves were smaller today, but as my two hours wore on they either got or seemed to get back up to waist high. I couldn't tell because there was no one else out to measure them against.
I did manage one perfect takeoff. I'm always surprised (or at least lately) when I don't get separated from my board at takeoff. I don't pearl much anymore, but the water often pushes me off the board before I can attempt to stand---not much of an improvement.
I didn't get up even with the perfect takeoff. I think I spent too much time being surprised that it was perfect.
After that things didn't go well. In frustration I got out and tried to go over the popup, slow-mo, on the beach. What I discovered is that sliding my foot up the board when it's turned sideways results in my foot being sideways when it reaches mid-board: however, it's just about impossible to put weight on it at that angle, especially enough weight to be able to use that foot to push myself up. I can only put weight on it when it's facing forward so I can bend my ankle back somewhat.
Try it yourself: can you do it? With your foot turned on its side you're really only able to use your arms to push up, and it's incredibly difficult.
My whole big problem is that I can't see a way to let go with your arms until your feet are on the board---yet while my arms are fully extended and holding on there is just not enough room to get my legs under me! Is this not a problem for anyone else? I mean, I have long legs, but not abnormally so!
If I can't figure this out, I am just wasting all my time and might as well quit.
If someone is going to tell me that in fact you have to let go with your arms before your feet touch the board, that means in essence that there is a period of time if only a split second when neither arms nor legs are in contact with the board as it speeds down the line (you know, kinda like a horse when it's running----no one thought the horse had all its feet off the ground at once until the invention of high speed photography). If that is the case, then I unequivocally, universally, thoroughgoingly give up attempting to surf. I am not an acrobat. Not on land, and not on sea.

That split second of seeming non-contact with the board is one of the things I love most about surfing. My pop-up is a little slower now that I'm only surfing a few days a week so I don't get thrill that I once got from popping up. You know, it's harder for women, especially older women, because of our lesser upper body strength. One of the reasons I lift weights religiously is so I can pop-up without hesitation. Women (normal women and not the skinny saline and botox supplemented women) tend to carry their weight in their lower bodies. I think that's one reason why it's harder for us to pop-up than it is for men (as they tend to carry most of their weight in their upper bodies). That's why it's so important for women to strengthen their upper bodies. When I first learned to surf, I used to practice pop-ups at home. I still do that practice when I feel like my pop-up is slowing down. Push-ups help too. Don't give up. It will come together.
Surfsister, I'm wondering how often you lift weights, how much and how often. I have been working out with weight machines (not free weights) for a long time trying to stengthen my arms. It is slow going, I have made a little progress but can't lift more than 60 lbs on my best machines. Also I do pushups. 3 sets of 20 or so. How much do I need to be able to do?
Just like everyone is saying, I also think there is a moment when neither are touching. Im sitting here at work, trying my best to replay my takeoffs in my head and visualizing every movement. To be completely honest, I cant remember. Its somehow ingrained in me and I do it like second nature. I NEVER think about a popup, just about my position on the wave, closeout or not, left or right, any other surfers, angle of takeoff, etc. I sometimes when learning new things form a type of mental block in my head. Thats what it seems you have going on or I must have some type of surfing in my blood because I remember being so focused on wanted to ride that wave and slash, that I never had to work on a popup, and i STARTED surfing on a 6'2"! I had maybe a couple of rounds of longboarding on my very own to introduce me to surfing before i started surfing with a good friend who showed me the ropes. Surfsister is right, you must of a little upper body strength to do the popup and it WILL become a second nature to you. I like surfsister, actually love that feeling of sliding on the face and my front foot planting on the deck, and feeling my back foot hit my traction pad. Just keep it up and whatever you do, dont give up. there have been many times I wanted to smash my board into a wall over something stupid but I didnt. Like tedzsaid, practice in your living room, and I think on the beach, take your fin out and lay that sucker on the ground and do popups. It shouldnt hurt the board but if your uncomfortable, rent a foam top and do it for a little bit. KEEP IT UP, IT WILL PAY OFF!
I lift three days a week. For upper body, I do:
Lat pulldowns (lats)
Military press (shoulders)
Bicep curls
Tricep pushdowns
Abs
Lower back
Right now I'm doing three sets of 20. This is for endurance. When I train for strength, I do sets of 6 or 7 with heavier weight. I've been lifting for years. I can't really tell you how much I lift since I use a Bowflex and it doesn't quite translate to real world pounds lifted on machines or free weights. Are you lifting the same amounts year round? If so, you need to switch up because your body becomes accustomed to the same old thing, thus preventing you from getting stronger. As for how much you should do, that all depends on your strength to weight ratio. I am bottom heavy; most of my muscle is in my hips and legs, especially after years of racing bikes. If I didn't lift, I probably wouldn't be able to pop-up quickly.

There was a time when I experimented with landing my back foot first.
Lately, I'm completely concentrating on the front foot and ignoring the back one. As you say, that results in my front foot not being far enough forward. As far as I know, my back foot doesn't do anything. It doesn't take any weight and it doesn't move from where is was before the popup.
The problem is I am mentally limited: I cannot think of what to do with more than one body part at a time! If I focus on the front foot I forget the back. If I focus on the back I can't think of the front. Which one is most important? If you were as cognitively limited as me, which body part would you concentrate on?
