Las Olas Surf Camp

OK, while you're waiting for my wetsuit, here's a review I wrote of my experience at the Las Olas surf camp for women in Sayulita, Mexico, last June.

I went there because I thought a surf camp just for women would be a good idea, and because I've had bad experiences with men surf instructors. Boy, was I ever wrong!

The short version: Don’t go to Las Olas unless you’re an absolute beginner thrilled just to be pushed into a small wave on a beginner board, i.e., a surf tourist, not a surfer. There is a crucial difference. Las Olas has way too many people, both at the break and in the classes, and “Lessons” consist mostly of crowd control.

Longer version: First the good part. The hotel where we stayed was great, or at least my room was. It faced the ocean and I could hear the waves and see the surfers from the room. The setting is beautiful. The mosquitoes mercifully left me alone. If not for these blessings, a frustrating and disappointing week would have turned into a miserable or even unbearable experience. However, this was just luck, as others complained of hot stuffy rooms and got eaten by mosquitoes.

You might be happy to pay 2000-2500 bucks if you like to stay in a nice place, but if you care more about surfing, the instruction is not worth the money.

You can stay in a hotel room in town double occupancy for $25, eat the same food we did for $30 a day, get a private lesson and a board for $30 a day. The six days would cost you $510. So you’re paying at least $1500 for the surf instructors of Las Olas. What you get are five group lessons of one hour each, with six people to each instructor. What this consists of, mostly, is waiting your turn for a wave over on the shoulder. Because you’re not allowed to try for a wave when it’s not your turn. “Instruction” consists of being placed and pushed on a wave. You might get two or three waves. The priority of the instructors is rationing waves: keeping you away from the peak where the locals are, keeping you from taking waves from the other women in the group. The reason for this, I guess, is that the break is too crowded; there just aren’t enough waves for everybody. But a break like that is the last place on earth anybody should put a surf camp!

When it’s not your lesson time, but the two hours when other groups are having lessons, you’re not allowed to go in the water----because you’d be taking “their” waves and “it would be disrespectful” Hell, if you were there by yourself and not in Las Olas, no one could keep you out of the water! Seems like everytime I tried to go in someone was stopping me; and everytime I got near the peak, one of the SurfNazis was yelling at me to get onto the shoulder because the peak belongs to the locals and I might get in their way and get hurt. After years of surfing NYC breaks as crowded as this one, I found that hilarious, but not in a good way.

You get one private lesson during the week. Mine did not result in any improvement in my ability. I asked about additional private lessons, but they’re not allowed: again, on the theory that it wouldn’t be fair to everybody else. (?) So I took two private lessons, at $30 each, from the boys at the Tigre surf school. That was the only fun I had all week.

Frankly, it was a relief just to be around men again! The Las Olas women were, overwhelmingly, girlie girls, more interested in jibberjabbering on the beach and buying every worthless trinket offered by the local vendors than going in the water. Not surprisingly, most of them said they found out about the camp through a puff piece in Lucky magazine. Now I’ve never heard of Lucky, but was told it’s “a magazine about shopping”. That tells you what type of women you’ll meet here. I tried hard, but couldn’t relate.

To make things worse, there were no waves to speak of; they were about the same size and quality as in Rockaway, two feet. I don’t blame Las Olas for this, however I do blame them for pushing the season into when they know the waves can be crap just to make more money. And I do blame them for not giving us the option to seek out spots where the waves might have been better. Those of us not thrilled with the 2 footers should have been assisted with transporation and logistics to seek out other spots, even if there were only a couple of us (most of the guests wouldn’t have known the difference between a closeout and a barrel). In the end, I travelled across the country to find waves I could have found at home. I paid nearly three grand and I have yet to ride my first wave.

I regret my choice of Las Olas, and don’t recommend it.

Well, when are you coming to LA? I, fellow sister surfer, too am over 40. I surf often. I . . . (drumroll, please) am going to get you surfing at the next level. I've only been at it for three years, but I seem to be doing something right. By the way, there are a lot of us older gals out there surfing. You need to come west!

amazing post! you captured the problem essence of these surf camps in a sweet, straightforward way. Sayulita is out of control...poor planning, now the place has been oversold for a surf season that doesn't exist. Word of mouth is stronger than any advertising when it comes to surf promises. Hope you had better luck on future surf trips.

I wondered about that "making girls out of women" slogan--I think being a woman is about a balanced concern for others as well as oneself--but somehow the idea of becoming a girl again just doesn't capture the depth of joy or playfulness I wish to express. I do admire successful women such as the founder of Las Olas and what she is achieving with her various endeavors . . . but a giggly, silly, shopper, and an expensive surf safari that is so monitored and crowded would have me sailing to the distant beaches of a romantic Mexico only the truly adventurous generally roam.

Thank you for this very candid report. You saved me from wasting a lot of $ for my upcoming Xmas vacation -- I was very tempted to book Las Olas after it was featured in a sports clothing catalogue for women. Do you or anyone have any recommendations for a non-threatening surf camp for women who are absolute beginners -- taught, ideally, by women instructors? Thanks!

Thank you for your review. I was trying to find out the location of Las Olas surf safari. I have been to Sayulita before and find it over crowded, the bay filled with leaking sewage and small surf.I will keep searching for a women only surf camp. FYI for great bike trips check out womantours.com.

Hi, I haven't surfed in years BUT I can tell you, having just reutrned from Nicaragua, that there is some great surf there! The swells were so big that many of the nights they were rolling into the hostel/hotel where I was staying, right on the beach.

If you want a crazy little surf village, forget San Juan del Sur. Go to Las Penitas...it's totally undiscovered (except for the local surfers and a handful or age 50 "old" surf dudes from the states) and just what you might be looking for.

Good luck, "ladies".

I went to the Surf Las Olas camp in Feb of 2006. It was a magnificent experience. The hotel was breathtaking, the waves kind and plentiful. The instructors were patient, fun and knowledgeable. The townspeople were friendly, although I did spy a couple of military trucks with armed soldiers...that was weird.

I'm anxious to get back to Sayulita and Surf Las Olas. I enjoyed being part of a camp of like-minded women who enjoy being athletic at any age. I didn't feel bound by rules, I felt free to enjoy the experience.

Dear Gmas Gone Surfing,
I read your review before going to Las Olas but decided to give it a try any way. I have to say my experience was disappointing as well. It's not what they advertise. Sayulita seems to have more tourists than locals and the whole women's camp is lead by a guy. (Albeit a nice one.) The value and organization of this supposedly world class organization just wasn't there for me. :( I won't be paying that much to be in Mexico ever again.

I booked a trip with Las Olas against my better judgement. I knew it was grossly overpriced, but thought it would be pampering and relaxing. I had spent the Fall going through a crazy house-hunting-duplex purchasing experience while juggling my college teaching and all the other demands of a modern life. A week before departure for the safari, I was in a very bad car accident and totaled my car and broke my sternum. This is when I learned that Manifesta's Manifesto "we empower women" and Bev Saunders' interview proclamation that "women are instinctive caretakers" was just empty PR. I can't tell you whether the Safari is great or if it is piss poor. I wasn't able to travel or surf. And true to their promise (READ THE FINE PRINT!) they refunded not one dime of my money. And no, they would not consider letting me postpone the trip for another time. They swallowed it--and I didn't even get the free surf guard and Las Olas water bottle! (Hah!) Once they knew I couldn't make it, I was toast. I did consider just going to Mexico and hanging out in the Villa,(and I was encouraged to do this while they assured me they would not refund one dime) but I read the fine print on their denial of liability, and realized that this was one cold-blooded outfit. At that point, I had fluid around my heart and a heart beat of 22. I didn't want to trust my self in Mexico to this kind of outfit. The kicker for me was the chirpy email that arrived during the safari I lost $3000.00 on--"having such a great time." That did provoke me to write an email response. I guess they were too busy to take my name off their email list, so I got an update from my safari about all the fun I was missing.
I learned to surf off Waikiki when I was 11 years old. My teacher was Rabbit Kekai. I grew up in Honolulu in the 50s, 60s and 70s and moved away from surfing when the boards got small and the egos got a little too big. I became a canoe paddler and boogie boarder. I go to Hawai'i all the time, but I always want to start surfing again and never do. If you want to learn to surf, and you love the true Aloha spirit, here's what I recommend: Go to VRBO and rent yourself and some close friends a nice house with an ocean view on Kaua'i. Contact Chris Kauwe at letsgosurfing@hotmail or 808 652-8897 and experience REAL good fun and the true Aloha spirit. If you time your visit right, you won't need to spend anywhere near $3000.00, and you'll be in beautiful Hawai'i on Kaua'i!! And Chris will make you laugh and he'll teach you how to surf. He even taught his little pet piggy to surf, so he can teach you! And if you have to miss a lesson, he won't get all hu hu and need to charge you. Just sayin'.
